Gossip Girl Rewatch: Woman On The Verge

When Gossip Girl Season 1 Episode 17 first aired back in 2008, I was visiting my parents in a house that didn't yet have DVR. This was also before I knew how to easily track down any episode of television that had just aired.

After Serena ended Gossip Girl Season 1 Episode 16 with the famous "I killed someone" line, I was like a dog with a bone trying to find a link for "Woman On The Verge."

Alas past 2 AM, I found some success, curled up in an armchair, and glued myself to my father's laptop. It did not disappoint.

Ah, the infamous ugly robe of Blair's doth appear again! So what did Serena do that was so horrible, she boarded a train up North and convinced Lily to send her to boarding school? Let's revisit.

Back on the night of the infamous Shepard wedding Serena got wasted and slept with Nate on top of the bar at The Campbell Apartment. We all knew that, but we just didn't know what she did after to deal with the guilt. It turns out there was a major pit stop in between the wedding and boarding school. And it involved Georgina.

Serena hopped a cab and raced to meet Georgie at the Eastview hotel. Georgina being the little shit-stirrer that she is, hid a camera in the corner to make a "genuine Serena Van Der Woodsen" sex tape. Serena barged in feeling sick over what she had done and wasn't into being slobbered on by Pete. She suggested they blow some lines, Pete went first and started seizing.

Serena wanted to try and save Pete but Georgina demanded they leave before they get in trouble. Serena dialed 911 from Pete's phone and hid across the street to make sure he made it out alive. He didn't. Serena thought she left him for dead and held that secret for as long as she could.

Then Georgina came back and used that little video as blackmail to get Serena to be her friend again.

Serena couldn't stand any of this and started to pull away from everyone and regress. After she confessed to Blair she disappeared to 1Oak and got wasted. Blair called the guys and they all got together to help. That's what they do, even when they hate each other. They're the non-judging breakfast club.

Blair: You can tell us anything. We don't judge. We're the non-judging Breakfast club. We're your best friends. Anything you do is something we did too.
Serena: If I tell you, it can never leave this room.

This episode was the climax of the second half of Gossip Girl season 1. It was the creation of the legendary NJBC. It pushed Dan into Georgina's arms. It reunited Lily and Rufus for one last night. And it proved to us just how far Serena would go to keep Dan in the dark about her dirty past. I loved it.

Poll of the week: Should Serena have just confessed to Dan? Sound off and remember to watch Gossip Girl online!

After the Gossip Girl Season 1 Episode 17 bombshell that Serena thought she killed someone, there was nowhere to go but up.

Or at least that's what we thought.

Serena and Lily resolved the whole Pete issue and Serena was desperate to tell Dan the truth about it all. Only she couldn't reach him because crazy Georgina slipped the battery out of his phone! (PS remember when phones had removable batteries?)

Maid of Honor

In Gossip Girl Season 1 Episode 18 Serena tried to make things right with Dan while her mother prepared for her fourth trip down the aisle. Oh Lily Van Der Woodsen...still planning a full blown black tie affair with a dress from Mark Ingram for wedding #4, that woman could never turn down the chance for a big soiree!

Meanwhile Serena was wandering Fifth avenue calling Dan repeatedly all night...because that's nowhere near either of their homes, but okay. When she finally showed up, Georgina was there and Serena was ready to go Real Housewives on her ass! I loved that Georgina feigned innocence when Serena walked in. Bitch the jig is up, everyone knows you're not "Sarah."

However it was too late. Dan had hooked up with Georgie after thinking Serena cheated on him. Boy moves fast, what can I say? Then Serena told him the whole story and somehow she's still the a-hole. I did love Derena when they were together, but sometimes Dan was just so self-righteous. Anyway, the damage was already done.

I will give Dan credit though for knowing Georgina needed to be taken down. Dan's first scheme with Blair was one of the best moments of Gossip Girl season 1. Nobody forgets their first takedown!

Plus, it rendered one of my all time favorite quotes in the entire series:

Haven't you heard?

Perfection. You know what else was perfection? Lily's garden party wedding. Everyone looked fantastic. Blair in the pink, Serena in the yellow. Truly beautiful. I also loved that it finally brought Chuck and Nate back together. Even if it took the Captain being shady to do so, the boys made up.

Once Nate forgave Chuck, Chuck kind of had the green light to go after Blair. I think Nate knew that Blair wasn't the love of his life, but he was worried that Chuck saw it only as a challenge. That was what it sounded like at least when Chuck agreed with the Captain saying no girl was worth coming between their friendship.

Mr. Archibald: Wow! Clearly I missed something while I was away. A little advice, fellas: You've been friends a long time. Whoever she is, she's not worth it.
Chuck: I couldn't agree more.
Nate: That's the problem.

Alas Chuck proved that he really was into Blair...at least for a week or so before he ditched her on a chopper for a Hearst sister. Ah, but that set things up for a great Gossip Girl Season 2 episode 1! See you next time!

XOXO.

Don't forget, you can always watch Gossip Girl online at TV Fanatic!

Gossip Girl Rewatch: Summer, Kind of Wonderful

Well... it wasn't a cliffhanger, but Gossip Girl Season 1 Episode 18 left some things to be desired.

A summer hiatus had us foaming at the bit for a dose of our favorite Upper East Siders (and Brooklyn kids).

Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 1 took us to one of the main places we would find the crew: East Hampton.

OMG Are You Serious?

As someone living in NYC who goes to the Hamptons I was all excited to see the familiar sites and then was quickly reminded that it's the dead of winter and got all sad. Well I guess that's what Netflix and the imaginary world of Gossip Girl are for!

Gossip Girl picked an awesome way to kick off its second season. Serena and Chuck were out East, drowning their sorrows in different ways. Chuck kept himself entertained by taking a world tour of women, who by the way definitely aren't allowed to get topless on Cooper's Beach but whatever.

Serena kept herself warm with Della Famina and episodes of The Closer. Her pretend relationship with Nate kept people off her back about being sad and had gossipers looking elsewhere instead of at Nate's affair with an older woman. That affair started off as hot, hot, hot. It also kicked off Nate's affinity for cougars.

So jumping into the mindset of re-watching this knowing that Dan was Gossip Girl, he really set that summer up so perfectly. Bragging about his conquests on the site and how they shouldn't call him "Lonely Boy" anymore- so transparent now it's like "how did we not know?" Total forehead palm. Doy!

Then Dan had the gall to be pissed when he showed up to the White Party and saw Serena kissing Nate? Dude you dumped her. Also I always thought it was interesting how nobody ever mentioned why it didn't work out between Nate and Vanessa. Maybe it was Dan's way of protecting Vanessa because he knew the real reason was her feelings for him.

Serena: Dan... Dan wait.
Dan: No thank you.
Serena: Dan, I didn't expect to see you. You surprised me.
Dan: Well, I have to say... you didn't.

By the way, Serena's Oscar De La Renta dress at the White Party was one of my all time favorite Serena Van Der Woodsen Gossip Girl fashion moments. Blair's outfits were lighter, happier, and more fun too. I just loved summer on Gossip Girl!

Naughty Nerena

Honorable mentions

  • Chuck asking what a Jitney was.
  • Jenny groveling to Eric.
  • Eric lamenting that Chuck had a P.I. on speed dial.
  • All of Blair's Chuck Bass puns.
  • Serena's lifeguard almost running over naked Nate in the street.
  • Laurel getting snubbed by Tinsley Mortimer.

However, much of this episode belonged to that landmark moment at the end. You know the one I'm talking about. Chuck versus Blair after Blair finds out that James is really Lord Marcus Beaton and Chuck tries to get her to stay at the party. Here's a hint. "Three words, eight letters."

If you can't remember, well shame on you, but luckily you can go watch Gossip Girl online at any time!

So who do you think had the more interesting reunion in the Gossip Girl season 2 premiere? Dan and Serena or Chuck and Blair?

Gossip Girl Rewatch: Never Been Marcused

Everyone knows that Queen B has always been desperate to be real royalty. When she found out her new boyfriend was a British Lord, it was on.

Blair went full throttle scheming in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 2 to woo Lord Marcus.

Blair went from being completely bored by the guy to completely infatuated. It happened so fast even Serena couldn't keep up. Then again Serena was busy rolling in the sand with a certain not-so Lonely Boy. How does Serena manage with all of that hair anyway? Her extensions were out of control in this episode.

Thanks to Chuck's P.I. he found out Marcus's identity around the same time Blair did. Realizing he couldn't stop Blair because he was rendered incapable of saying those "3 words, 8 letters" Chuck decided to befriend the enemy. Then he went a step higher and befriended the enemy's stepmother: Duchess Catherine.

It turns out that Nate was sleeping with a royal cougar all summer and never knew it! But before Chuck got make a proper introduction at Blair's dulls-ville party, Blair's claws were out and scratching.

Chuck: I thought you might like to meet my friend.
Blair: Why, so she can warn me bout the effects of too much botox?
Catherine: Blair, is it? I'm Duchess Beaton.
Blair: [flabbergasted] Duchess? Nice to meet you.

I love Serena's complete faith in Blair to be the "Real B" and win over Duchess Beaton with her sweet self. Uh, the real B is an evil, scheming, awesome bitch not a sweetheart. Oh Serena.

If we thought that whole introduction was awkward, enter Nate into the picture and it all got really, really complicated. Poor Nate had a lot to worry about this episode when his mother's informed him of their financial problems. He tried to act all tough guy to the investigators at his house, but it just came off as kind of sad.

It's interesting that Nate could be so pissed about his best friend lending his mom money, but then he was all devil may care about leading on Vanessa and banging a married woman in a public place. Choose your battles Archibald.

Then after all that, he thought it was okay to take Catherine's money but not Chuck's? Bad choice. But we'll get to that one in the next episode's rewatch!

Notables

  • Remember when everyone started to notice that weird sexual tension between Rufus and Vanessa? Ick.
  • Serena and Dan's hook up on the Jitney would never happen. Those bathrooms are gross and cramped.
  • Blair vs. Duchess Beaton in the library = awesome.
  • What the hell kind of dogs does Ann Archibald have? Dog/Wolf hybrids?
  • Blair's nightgown at the end is actually an Elizabeth and James dress and I love it.

Until next time!

For now, vote on who you think is more devious: Blair or Duchess Beaton. If you missed this gem of an episode, don't forget you can always watch Gossip Girl online at anytime.

"I thought our story was epic. You and me. Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined and blood shed. Epic." - Logan Echolls, Veronica Mars

We thought so, too, Logan, and our hearts still race at the thought of some of the epic couples that have graced the small screen over the years.

Our list includes vampires and surgeons, castaways and cartoons, along with a double dose of Joshua Jackson!

These television twosomes had ups. They had downs. But they also had passion and intensity and laughter and moments that will live forever in TV history.

Did we forget your favorite couple? Possibly. But that's what makes these sort of countdowns so much fun, isn't it?

Click around, discuss and debate our choices for Most Epic TV Couple Ever now:

23 Epic TV Couples Who Define True Love
From The Max to a marriage, Zack and Kelly made the dreams of all Saved by the Bell dreams come true.
View As List
Zack and Kelly

1. Zack and Kelly

From The Max to a marriage, Zack and Kelly made the dreams of all Saved by the Bell dreams come true.

Meredith & Derek

2. Meredith & Derek

The only couple on this list who actually hooked up prior to the series ever starting, Grey's Anatomy kicked off the morning after Meredith and Derek went home from a bar together. Sure, he was married at the time - but that technicality was no match in the end for (sorry we have to say it...) the McDreamiest pairing on all of television.

Cory and Topanga

3. Cory and Topanga

How strong was the love between Cory and Topanga? Strong enough for a spinoff!

Peter & Olivia

4. Peter & Olivia

Fringe tried to keep Peter and Olivia apart by introducing Fauxlivia from another world, but absolutely nothing could tear these two apart, not even an alternate version of Olivia. Vulnerable Olivia and stolen Peter met as children and formed a bond that transcended time and space. They literally turned back time to save each other and their family. Can there be a greater love?

Logan & Veronica

5. Logan & Veronica

Veronica Mars reminds us that epic love never dies, even when a series ends. Veronica and Logan didn't make it the first time but no Piz was going to come between the steamy chemistry that nearly explodes every time these two are on screen. They get their happy ending.

Jesse and Becky

6. Jesse and Becky

It was a Full House full of love for Jesse and Becky for many years on this ABC sitcom.

Sawyer & Juliet

7. Sawyer & Juliet

Of Lost's couple Damon Lindelhof said, "Juliet will always be Sawyer's true love." That says a lot, but finding each other before a candy machine in what might have been purgatory was one of the most emotional scenes ever shown. No quips from Sawyer with Juliet, just love.

Mulder & Scully

8. Mulder & Scully

The original skeptic and believer duo to cross over and find love were Scully and Mulder on X-Files. Even being abducted by aliens didn't destroy the love that grew out of their ultimate trust as partners and friends.

Mitchell and Cameron

9. Mitchell and Cameron

One is flamboyant and one is all-business. But the couple cracks us up on Modern Family.

Damon & Elena

10. Damon & Elena

Damon returned to Mystic Falls with the intent of bringing back Katherine, but instead he found Elena, the same beauty with all of the good qualities he sought in love. Their chemistry is smoking hot and they forgive each other above all else. Damon has humanity and Elena feels free when they're together. That's magical.

Pam and Jim

11. Pam and Jim

Who says office relationships never work out? Jim and Pam proved that adage very much wrong.

Buffy & Spike

12. Buffy & Spike

For Buffy, vampire Spike transformed into a bad boy killing machine into a compassionate man with a soul. Their chemistry was out of this world and made Buffy's previous love look dull (Sorry Angel!).

Pacey & Joey

13. Pacey & Joey

Pacey and Joey showed more excitement and sizzle than Joey ever had with her initial choice, Dawson. Tis a pity the series was called Dawson's Creek because Pacey and Joey stole our hearts.

Coach & Tami Taylor

14. Coach & Tami Taylor

Coach and Tami Taylor had, quite simply, the marriage everyone aspires to have -- full of love, affection, honesty and passion for each other with a willingness to compromise and support each other. Swoon!

Marshall and Lily

15. Marshall and Lily

They've made love very sweet and very hilarious. Maybe the funniest couple in TV history.

Seth & Summer

16. Seth & Summer

She was the popular girl. He was the nerd. Their love seemed like a flower that would never blossom, until Summer learned what other OC fans discovered on Day One: Seth is The Man! Highlighted by a Spider-Man-like kiss in the rain, this relationship ended in a beautiful series finale marriage.

Chuck and Blair

17. Chuck and Blair

We call them Chair. And we'll never forget the ups and downs that led to their love.

Carrie & Mr. Big

18. Carrie & Mr. Big

Sex and the City would have never been the same without Carrie's quest to land Mr. Big. They continually pushed and pulled each other until they realized denial was fruitless.

David and Donna

19. David and Donna

David and Donna ended Beverly Hills, 90210 as a married couple. And the former nabbed the latter's V-Card prior to that.

Lorelai & Luke

20. Lorelai & Luke

On Gilmore Girls Luke and Lorelai started out as friends and took a slow burn toward romance. They never lost their ability to push each others buttons to keep things fresh and we still don't know if they ended up together forever.

Ross & Rachel

21. Ross & Rachel

The ultimate back-and-forth couple... who we all knew would end up forth in the end. But it took a baby and many other boyfriends and girlfriends in between before Ross and Rachel arrived at that same conclusion on Friends. Just never use the word "break" around these two.

Homer and Marge

22. Homer and Marge

Homer and Marge have raised three nearly normal kids on The Simpsons. We just won't count Bart.

Angela & Jordan Catalano

23. Angela & Jordan Catalano

My So Called Life was almost as brief as any time these two spent together. The show's cancellation forever scarred girls who, like Angela, set their sites on the cool guy just out of touch. Angela got close enough to kiss Jordan, but we'll never know what could have been. Epic.

9 Truly Horrible Series Finales: Where Does How I Met Your Mother Rank?

How I Met Your Mother made history last night.

Just not the kind any TV show really wants to make.

The HIMYM finale has been widely panned by critics and fans, with most thinking its major twists - the Mother is dead! Ted and Robin are together! - rendered the entire series theme, title and trajectory moot.

Where do you come down on the one-hour farewell? Was it merely a bad series finale? Or the worst series finale of all-time?

Compare the disappointing episode to the depressing, anger-filled, irritating ways in which other shows have come to an end now:

Weeds

Gossip Girl Rewatch: The Dark Night

$

As the weather here in NYC grows warmer, I'd be remiss to forget the one time that things grew so hot in the Big Apple that there was a blackout.

Of course, I'm talking about Gossip Girl season 2 episode 3, otherwise known as "The Dark Night."

Blair rushed back from the Hamptons in Gossip Girl season 2 episode 2 to throw an impromptu "mature" party that would be worthy enough for Lord Marcus. Aside from Blair busting Nate and Catherine in the library, the party sucked.

Now that they're back on the Upper East Side for good, Blair was back in her element. The only thing she couldn't handle was a distraction. Too bad her big party coincided with the timing of her bestie dropping the bomb that she and Lonely Boy were back on.

Blair acting like a bitch was nothing new, but she did have one really good point. Did Dan and Serena work out all the issues that broke them up before they decided to get back together? Nope, they didn't.

Serena: I forgive you... for Georgina.
Dan: And I forgive you ...
Serena: We keep having this same fight. At Bart's brunch, a year ago. At the wedding...
Dan: Where we talked about the fight at Bart's brunch.
Serena: And now here. [pauses] I can't change who I am, Dan.
Dan: Me neither.

And when they were trapped in that elevator during the blackout, all of the issues came floating back to the surface. It was only a matter of time before things bubbled to the surface after those mini Blairs and Serenas accosted them in Central Park.

Also if Dan was really Gossip Girl the whole time, how messed up was it that he would post a poll about whether or not he and Serena should be together? Or was it actually a brilliant way for him to get another opinion as he contemplated whether or not he should get back with Goldilocks.

Back at Blair's party, Chuck was teasing Blair about how she and Marcus probably have a crappy sex life. He was right. But Chuck was only using Blair as "sexual Draino" according to Serena.

Chuck was having a little problem with his um...ability to perform. Excuses, excuses, Chuck and Blair were always just drawn together like magnets. When she pretended she didn't know it was really Chuck who told her to blow out her candle and meet him in her room? Oh puhlease!

Queen B needed to feel wanted. Something she surprisingly had in common with the Duchess.

I think I truly felt bad for Vanessa in this episode. She genuinely cared enough about Nate to back off and do what she thought was best for him. He opened up to her and she put his needs above hers.

Dan: Why'd you tell him to stay with that woman? Y'know, I thought you liked him.
Vanessa: I do. That's why I did it.
Dan: I don't understand.
Vanessa: She told me that if Nate left her, she would go to the FBI and tell them where Nate's dad is hanging out. So ... I really didn't have a choice.

There was stuff about little J and Rufus in this episode too, but nothing exciting enough to recap. If you feel like feeding your GG nostalgia, don't forget you can always watch Gossip Girl online.

So Nate and Vanessa: Yay or nay? Vote below and sound off in the comments! More reviews to come all spring and summer long.

Gossip Girl Rewatch: The Ex-Files

Running into your ex when you break up? Ewww... the worst.

Well, unless you look like Blake Lively. That might cushion the blow a little bit.

We were lead to believe that Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 4 was all about dealing with that awkward ex run in situation, but really it was about Chuck Bass and his incredible ability to manipulate the situations around him.

Senior year had begun and after the elevator break up in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 3, Serena was dreading running into Dan. She was even willing to hear about Lily's honeymoon with Bart Bass to avoid going to school.

Dan was nervous too and then he met a new student named Amanda who was just as into writers and books as he was. How interesting and coincidental that they would meet on her first day. Or was it?

This girl is Dan with boobs.

Blair

Let's just all admit that the amount of effort Chuck put into dethroning Blair and re-crowning Serena was pathetic but it was equally f**king BRILLIANT.

Hire a girl to pursue Serena's ex, get Serena to assert her sexiness and social power in order to defend herself. Boost Serena's ego to push her back on top while Blair is mysteriously MIA.

Oh Blair, that whole Katherine/Marcus debacle was awful. There have been several times in the course of the series where I wanted to strangle Vanessa and this was one of them. You can't just assume you know what conversation a person is having just by watching it through the window.

Blair knows how to handle shit and Vanessa jumped the gun and ended up screwing Nate in the end. Boo Hoo. Let's just bid that creepy incestual family adieu!

Google revenge and you get BlairWaldorf.com.

Dan

Dan may not have liked Blair at that point, but he knew what he was talking about. The whole scene at the end when Dan was being pointedly ignored by everyone and Serena strolled into school with the posse behind her was classic.

I remember people say that the slow-mo clique walk reminded them of the movie The Craft. To be fair, the slow-mo clique walk is like a patented popular girl move in all teen movies.

So Serena took back the thrown. How do you feel about that? I think I'll just leave this Chuck Bass quote as my closing remark:

You're about to see the real Serena.

Chuck

Most of the time I truly love Blair Waldorf and her aristocratic whacky ass. But then there are those other times I wanna smack the girl and tell her to grow up.

Then again, it's fiction and nobody plays a selfish, spoiled villain better than Blair does.

So what was her beef in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 5? None other than her bestie Serena!

Serena Rules All

There is nothing Blair hates more than sharing, whether it be sharing a boy, a new dress, or the spotlight.

Chuck worked his magic to re-crown Serena in the Constance hierarchy in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 4. One of the things that makes Serena so desirable, such an "it girl" is the fact that she doesn't really care all that much.

Don't ever go to high school, Dorota. The girls are spoiled, stupid and ungrateful! One snapshot with a socialite and it's all Serena, Serena, Serena!

Blair

Blair wants the title of Queen too much. It turns her green with envy and into a complete monster. One of the things that brings the competition out of Blair the most is her mother's attention.

It was eerily reminiscent of the time Eleanor asked Serena to model in Gossip Girl Season 1 Episode 4 and Blair flipped out. That was a dick move Eleanor pulled back in season 1, but this time I really thought Blair went way overboard. Sabotaging her mother's company simply because she was resentful? Oy.

Who knew Jenny Humphrey's dress would be good enough to save the day and steal the spotlight? Especially because apparently what she considers to be a dress is really just a long shirt. That dress she wore to the fashion show was so short, I think she probably flashed Rufus on the way out.

Dan out of his comfort zone made for some great entertainment. Chuck was so miserable in those days...Okay, Chuck was miserable for a lot of days. The two of them never made a great duo, but the scenes they had together were definitely interesting.

I also always found it interesting that Chuck confided in Dan about how his mother really died when he never told his best friend Nate.

I admired Lonely Boy's stance on not exploiting a dude (even if he hated him) just for his work. But then again Lonely Boy turned out to be Gossip Girl, soooo really he was just stowing all of his information away to make a much bigger splash down the road.

So what did you think of Dan and Chuck's night on the town? If you want to revisit their random moment together, don't forget you can watch Gossip Girl online at any time!

Gossip Girl Rewatch: New Haven Can Wait

While New York City is such a major part of the Gossip Girl series, sometimes filming a non-NYC episode helps spice things up.

Such was the case in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 6 when the characters took off for a school visit to Yale in New Haven, Connecticut.

Fine it was really filmed at Columbia in NYC...but let's pretend we don't know that!

College of Her Dreams

Blair had been dreaming of Yale ever since she was a little girl. I admit that Dorota saying she was proud of her prior to the college visit was a touching little moment that made me love Dorota even more.

Serena was off to follow in Lily's footsteps and visit Brown...until Blair provoked her. I know Blair was sick of her and deathly jealous...I mean what girl wouldn't be jealous of Marc Jacobs naming a bag after her gorgeous best friend? But still Blair felt the need to provoke S and that's when things took a turn for the worse.

Since we're not friends anymore, let me speak frankly. You're not that smart. You lack focus and discipline. Charm is all well and good, but in the real world, knowledge is power. You wouldn't make it past the first round of admissions at Yale no matter how hard you tried.

Blair

Little did she know that Serena had been sent a handwritten invitation to interview at Yale. Here's the thing that is total BS: Serena's grades were bad and she was a slacker and party girl until her junior year. She dropped out of boarding school for reasons we don't find out until Gossip Girl season 4

Is it realistic that Yale would want her because of her socialite status and spot on Page Six?

While I don't actually believe that would happen in real life, what do I know? Besides this is fiction and we're supposed to suspend a little imagination.

What I REALLY can't believe is that Eric Daman (who is normally a genius) dressed Blair in a pea green and mustard suit teacher's outfit for her interview while Serena went stunting like it was Friday night at the hottest restaurant in town with her shirt cut down to there.

I know Serena is the sexpot, but surely she is smarter than to think it's fine to basically have your tits out at a college interview. Appropriate? No. But did she look good? Absolutely, always does.

If we're going to discuss fashion in this episode, the headband that Blair wears to the Dean's party must be mentioned. Not because it's any different than her usual but because of the epic physical fight she and Serena get into outside that leads to Serena ripping off her headband and claiming she hates it.

We don't see the likes of headband hate again until Humphrey introduces Blair to college life in Gossip Girl season 3.

Serena-Blair Fight

Now can we talk about the awesomeness that was Chuck Bass one-upping Skull & Bones? First of all, it reminded me of that delicious Paul Walker movie The Skulls

Nate: I thought we were gonna do something. What happened to your master plan of finding the Skull & Bones?
Chuck: You don't find them. They find you.

Of course Chuck would not only outdo the secret society, but he saved Nate, turned them on Dan, and got blackmail in the process ensuring they'd never go after him. Chuck really thinks of it all, doesn't he?

I must say that I admired Nate not letting Dan take the fall for him. He was a dumbass to think he could fight an entire group of guys alone, but he got away with it.

So who had the better storyline in "New Haven Can Wait?" If you can't remember and need to re-watch the episode, remember that you can watch Gossip Girl online at any time!

Gossip Girl Rewatch: Chuck In Real Life

Sometimes I'm surprised after a Gossip Girl rewatch that I find an episode so much better than I did the first time around.

Such is the case for Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 7, known to the GG fans as "Chuck In Real Life."

The initial thing I remember liking about this episode was the very Cruel Intentions aspect of the whole bet between Chuck and Blair. Admittedly that is one of my favorite movies and Chuck was always sort of a Sebastian Valmont 2.0.

Blair's Agent Provocateur lingerie in the end scene deserves an honorable mention. As does the way Chuck turns the entire wager around on her:

Blair: What took you so long?
Chuck: If you thought that was long, you have no idea what you're in for.

While that quote was a bit of a double entendre (Chuck could be talking about his stamina in bed) what is really meant was that he was done chasing Blair. It was her turn to chase him.

Remember when she wanted him to say those "three words, eight letters?" Well now he wants to hear it too.

I think what I realized in this episode is that Chuck actually had some quality in him (aside from entertaining us) and that Bart Bass really was such a psychotic a--hole. Chuck is so damaged because he's been rejected his whole life.

But alas from his damaged soul he does have a beating heart in there somewhere and better yet he has passions: one of them being investing in entertainment and nightlife, particularly ones with charm and history.

Vanessa's "save the landmark" project may have started as a bet, but Chuck wants to own, develop, and maintain real estate and he found that the bar was actually something that interested him. Too bad Blair and her pettiness were too concerned with burning Vanessa to realize Chuck actually cared.

It all makes sense now why Chuck flipped the switch and stopped letting himself feel consumed by Blair and started letting her feel consumed with needing him.

Onto the rest of the episode, Bart's attempt to act like a family unit was laughable. Aww Serena's little suit had its own seat on the plane! I mean Lily...who gives a sh*t.

Best was Serena's utter defiance of it all:

Oops! I forgot to put on underwear!

Serena

There's the rebel we all know and love!

Elsewhere Nate was loveable and lost as Dan figured out he was kind of living like a homeless person (in his Fifth avenue mansion). Poor Nate, I'll take you in!

So who had your favorite storyline this episode? If you need a refresher, don't forget you can watch Gossip Girl online at any time!

Gossip Girl Rewatch: Pret-a-Poor-J

To me, Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 8 will always be known as the episode when Jenny Humphrey got a bad haircut.

I'm sorry, but it's true. The whole over-dyed, over-cut, shaggy mullet wanna be Joan Jett situation was just not cute.

Sorry J, let's just call it like it is.

But you know what? She still ended the episode by locking lips with Nate, so who am I to really judge? You do you, girl.

"Pret-a-Poor-J" was all about Jenny's ambitions to further her career and not play by the rules. To be fair, she was 15 and taking on a big task and it didn't help that she had Agnes whispering in her ear.

Agnes: Okay, seriously, you work your ass off, and for what? So Eleanor can rip off your ideas?
Jenny: No, Eleanor promised that I could be in the meetings with the buyers from Mendels and Barney's today.
Agnes: Just like she introduced you to the guy from Bloomingdale's.

Agnes it's called putting in your dues. Jenny has been impulsive at times and I think she let her mind get clouded with Agnes' ideas and opinions when she was stressed out already. Good thing Nate was around before she shed any more clothes in front of the camera. Good ol' Nate.

In addition to the haircut from hell, this episode introduced one of the lamer love interests ever to grace Gossip Girl: Aaron Rose. He was a one note character who somehow lured Serena in. Just how he did that, I will explain after I rewatch Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 9.

Now onto Chuck and Blair.

Wow. Someone loves Chuck Bass.

Dan

Dan's advice was good until he decided to mess with them because of Vanessa and frankly I don't really blame him. However, the writers knew we were all getting antsy watching Chuck and Blair dance around each other and that's why they gave us that ending scene.

Chuck explained to Blair that the reason they couldn't say those words wasn't because they didn't mean them (they did love each other, duh) but rather because if they said it...then what? Chuck and Blair relish the chase of it all, the games, the thrills.

Who wants to see Chuck and Blair go to the movies and Chuck and Blair hold hands? Chuck may have said it, but that was the message the writers wanted us to hear. "Sorry guys but we gotta keep it interesting."

Things hadn't quite reached a fever pitch yet. If you need a refresher course, watch Gossip Girl online at anytime!

So guys...what did you really think of Jenny's haircut?

Gossip Girl Rewatch: There Might Be Blood

Jenny's awful haircut and Serena's boring relationship with Aaron Rose both continued on Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 9.

Needless to say, this wasn't my favorite installment of GG!

Actually Jenny looked pretty cute in the above scene and it didn't hurt that she had Nate attached to her lips! Well it didn't hurt for viewers, but it definitely hurt her relationships.

After ditching Waldorf Designs after getting a little too big for her britches, Jenny decided to go out on her own with the help of crazy model Agnes. I'd like to say that I wish Eleanor had given Jenny more credit and let her sit in on some meetings to get the experience, but we all know that the world of fashion is vicious.

That just wasn't suitable for little J. I have to hand to her, she has a lot of balls for a 15-year-old girl. How many people can say they designed and created a season's worth of dresses seemingly overnight and then staged a guerilla fashion show?

Not that it mattered much to Rufus, Vanessa, or Dan.

Elsewhere Blair and Serena attempted to find a way to help Blair get into Yale. That involved watching Emma, the daughter of a Yale VIP. Unfortunately Emma was more into getting ridden like My Little Pony than playing My Little Pony and that resulted in a chase around Manhattan.

Chuck: The only thing I like that aged is my Scotch.
Emma: What, it's old people? Blair told me it was all hot guys!
Chuck: Sounds to me like you've been taken for a ride.
Emma: How about you take me for a ride instead?
Chuck: Looks like you just hooked yourself a Bass.

Chuck almost fell for it, but then realized she was just a tad too young and crazy for his taste. Wait, Chuck has a conscience? Well at least he declared the back of the limo to be too sacred a spot for any shameful activities.

This episode was full of contradictions. Chuck and Blair had consciences and Serena wasn't getting a guy's undivided attention. Then Jenny and Rufus got into a fight that resulted in her moving out and it was like all was right in GG land again.

Don't forget you can visit GG land anytime you want when you watch Gossip Girl online!

So whose turn of conscience was more surprising to you? Chuck or Blair?

Inconceivable!

Blair wanted to be an elegant lady like Grace Kelly by her 18th birthday. Did she succeed? Join us for the rewatch of Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 10 to find out!

After actually acting somewhat selflessly for at a point in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 9, Blair refocused her attention on her favorite person: herself. After all, it was her 18th birthday!

Eleanor was shockingly going to be in attendance and even better she had her first serious boyfriend since Harold Waldorf left her for another man. Yes "Bonfire of the Vanity" marked the first appearance of the adored Cyrus Rose.

Though it wasn't love at first sight, Blair quickly realized that her mother's new man had real potential when he outmaneuvered her almost immediately. Touche Blair, touche.

Blair: Screw Grace Kelly. I need a scheme.
Dorota: Oh no...
Blair: That tiny man must have a secret I can exploit.

Also, I loved her birthday outfit and how excited Dorota was to meet Cyndi Lauper. By the way, was Dorota just the more underrated character of all time? I think so.

Serena continued to date the most one note, boring loser of all time who thought he was too cool for school. I have a few things to say on this whole matter:

  • It really is unreal how quickly Serena falls for guys.
  • Who the hell leaves the house in a slip? Like her ass was basically out. It's a nice ass, but still.
  • Aaron sends Serena maps to all of his favorite places. She ended up in Times Square. Enough said.
  • The speech she gives him after he says this was so brilliant, I wish I had it written down:

Well, I'm seeing lots of people. I don't know how it works in high school, but I like to date more than one person at a time.

Aaron

Basically I don't have this word for word, but she told him something like "thanks for that condescending little lecture, but that's not what I'm interested in."

From now on, every girl who wants more from a guy only to be made to feel like a moron for wanting to be exclusive needs to give that speech. I know I wish I had. And look, Aaron came back to her, voila.

Elsewhere, Dan realized that maybe he should take a cue from Jenny's balls of steel and go after the Chuck Bass/ Bart Bass story. He got pretty far until he remembered he had a conscience. Which is so contradictory because he was technically supposed to have been Gossip Girl that whole time...

Also no one should take advice from Jenny as she ended this episode homeless, with her designs burnt to a crisp, and debating emancipation. Seriously the only time emancipation ever worked was for Nathan Scott on One Tree Hill.

Speaking of...I'm thrilled to announce that we are kicking off a One Tree Hill rewind here at TV Fanatic! If you're in the mood for something a little more cheery, we also just started Gilmore Girls retro reviews. Last, but not least don't forget you can watch Gossip Girl online anytime!

So onto the poll of the week: Was Aaron Serena's most boring boyfriend?

Gossip Girl Rewatch: The Magnificent Archibalds

Every television show has a holiday they like to focus on and for Gossip Girl that was always Thanksgiving.

Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 11 was all about Blair Waldorf's favorite holiday and the GG families.

The fashion in this episode was really strong.

I remember that black and red plaid dress of Jenny's and how popular it was back in 2008/2009. I loved Blair rocking the usual demure with a hint of the sexy in that stunning green dress. And what would life be without Serena looking a little too sexy at a family celebration?

[to Serena] If you're talking about the dress, I say higher.

Chuck

Aaron and Serena became official, but she left out pieces of her past which always felt like Serena's major issue with guys. She was always trying to reinvent herself and hide who she used to be and that's probably why so many of them crashed and burned. The only guy that always accepted her was Nate.

There's also the always back and forth pull between Serena and Dan. It wasn't quite center-stage in this episode, but his clash with Aaron was. Even when fighting with Dan he was so monotonous.

Most of the Humphrey family storyline focused on Jenny wanting to get emancipated. Of course Lily found out and got involved, because she can't resist anything that involves Rufus.

Lily: I saw your father today.
Jenny: I had a feeling.

Bart's dossiers on the family didn't help the mood either. This was the beginning of Lily's whole big secret storyline, which I was totally shocked by! However, that wasn't for another few episodes.

Blair was pissed off about Cyrus moving in and Eleanor's engagement. Of course she was just throwing her usual spoiled fit. But it was a sweet moment to see Harold show up from France and with his traditional pie.

Nate turning in his father was a way to show us that Nate actually has a deeper side to him. He does the right thing and is a good guy, no matter how hard it would be. At least that's what I think.

Does Nate have a good moral compass?

Gossip Girl Rewatch: It's a Wonderful Lie

Eeek! It brings me pain to give any episode from Gossip Girl Seasons 1 and 2 a less than stellar rating, but alas... it has happened.

Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 12 just wasn't that great.

Maybe it was the overwhelming amount of Aaron Rose and his ex-girlfriend or the whole Bart Bass debacle, but "It's a Wonderful Lie" just didn't do it for me.

I think knowing that Bart Bass faked his death probably deducted an entire rating point from this episode. Honestly it should have deducted 2, but I don't know that the writers had even decided at that point that it would be a fake-out. Since they also brought us so many wonderful installments of GG I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

Let me just say for a minute that Gossip Girl season 5 was one of the worst seasons of television (up there with One Tree Hill Season 8.) Mind you this is not a Dair vs Chair thing, but a "we've run out of innovative storylines thing." If you for one minute thought Blair Waldorf truly ever would've had her hair in messy bed waves for her wedding, you are straight trippin'.

But back to season 2. So Bart Bass died except we all know that he didn't so nobody cares the second time around. Lily was about to leave him for Rufus anyway because Lily Van der Woodsen wanted to break Elizabeth Taylor's record for most marriages.

Serena and Aaron ended up double dating with Dan and Aaron's ex-girlfriend Lexi. So much Aaron and Lexi and speculation that Dan was going to bang Lexi the first night. Who cares! Question: didn't that conversation between Dan and Serena about their sex make it sound like they only did it that one time?

Serena: Shouldn't I give him a heads up or something?
Blair: Oh, absolutely. Guys hate to be caught off guard by sex on the first date.

Onto the Snowflake Ball: Chuck and Blair picked each other's dates and ended up picking the 2.0 versions of themselves. Then when they were arguing, the dates hooked up. Classic C & B. I always loved their little betting games. Poor Dorota would've quit if she had to work for Chuck!

Jenny was understandably mad at Vanessa, but she kind of forgot the part where Vanessa had Nate first. I get it, Nate's a total dish. But teaming up with the mean girls? Please they looked like they were wearing ugly bridesmaid dresses dressed up with wannabe Blair accessories.

I would take Vanessa's dress without the slip and get humiliated any day over being one of the mean girls. Hi have you seen Jessica Szohr's bod? Ain't nothing to be ashamed about there hunnie!

Overall, a very below par episode I thought. But perhaps I'm alone in my opinion. If you need a reminder don't forget you can watch Gossip Girl online at any time.

Were you less than impressed by "It's a Wonderful Lie"?

Gossip Girl Rewatch: O Brother, Where Bart Thou?

$

Despite the depressing nature of Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 13, it was a very strong follow up to "It's a Wonderful Lie."

"O Brother, Where Bart Thou" explored the relationships of the GG characters during a time of grief.

The sad dramatic moments on teen shows are often about stealing boyfriends and broken hearts and friendships, but this was a whole other level of loss.

Granted we all now know that Bart faked his death, but at the time his family and friends were truly mourning. None more so than Chuck despite how horribly Bart treated him over the years.

Ed Westwick did a great job expressing Chuck's pain in a way that only Chuck would. Whether it was getting wasted or getting in Dan's face, he remained true to his Chuck-ness. Until the end...when he showed up in Blair's room in tears and I swear my eyes got a little bit misty even 6 years later!

Blair was in amazing form for this episode. I love when Nate called her out on nuturing ways.

[to Nate] I'm not maternal, I've just been spending too much time with Cyrus and I'm turning Jewish. Come on, I see kugel.

Blair

Everything about that statement was so on point. Cyrus helped Blair become a warmer person because he helped Eleanor become a warmer person. Remember in early Gossip Girl season one when Eleanor would basically encourage Blair's anorexia? Now Cyrus is telling her to schmear some more cream cheese on that bagel and she is happy to do so. "Not enough!"

Can we just take a moment and acknowledge that Serena is dressed for the club and not a funeral? Also another moment to acknowledge how un-surprised we are by it all? Okay good.

People handle grief differently and for some people it makes them open up to love and appreciate the good moments even more. Eleanor and Cyrus got married. Lily wanted to seize the day with Rufus.

Too bad there was a huge roadblock on that path to Cornwall with Rufus and that roadblock goes by the name of Cece Rhodes. I remember being SO excited to find out why Lily was in the institution in France.

Cece: I gave her a chance to tell you. She didn't take it. In fact, she asked me to pay a lot of money to make the problem go away.
Rufus: But you didn't do that, did you?
Cece: The real problem is that she's in love with you.
Rufus: Why is that a problem?
Cece: Because so long as she holds on to this, the two of you don't have a chance in hell of making this work. I want you to have this chance. Don't you?

BOOM! Lily and Rufus had a love child. I couldn't even handle that moment. It was more than I had hoped and I didn't guess it for one minute.

Now onto you all.

Were you shocked at Lily's secret?

10 Truly Terrible Finales: Where Does True Blood Rank?

True Blood came to a painful, insulting end Sunday night, with most loyal viewers of this HBO hit agreeing the series concluded in a boring, almost hypocritical manner.

Here is my take on why the True Blood finale so badly missed its mark.

But was the suicide-based finale the worst concluding episode of a show in TV history? What other comedies and dramas would compete against True Blood for this (dis)honor?

Compare the events in Bon Temps this week with other disappointing finales below and decide:

Did we leave any series out? And, of course, which is the worst of the worst?

True Blood
Sookie helped Bill kill himself because he didn't think she could live a normal life with him around. So much for true love. And for the notion of True Blood as a wild and crazy series who definied "normal" in its own eccentric ways.

Gossip Girl Rewatch: In the Realm of the Basses

$
0
0

After the well done episode and difficult departure of Bart Bass in Gossip Girl Season 2 Episode 13, everyone had one question on their minds:

How would Chuck Bass react?

For most people there are 5 stages of grief: Denial/Isolation, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance.

For Chuck Bass, this played out pretty much exactly by the book, but with #5 lingering. Chuck Bass is very stubborn and very dark. It will take him a little more than a pep talk from Blair to accept the loss of his father. But by the end of "In the Real of the Basses" after Chuck revisited the Denial/Isolation portion by drowning himself in booze, hookers, and drugs in another part of the world...Chuck maybe have come to some sort of acceptance.

All it took was a little visit from Jack Bass.

Jack: Blair, you came to greet us.
Blair: Not you. Chuck. You said you found him.
Jack: In Bangkok. He was staying at our hotel there. You hear the term "den of iniquity," but until you really see one -
Blair: Do you have him or not?

Sure he swooped in as the hero, the hot young uncle who was able to find Chuck and bring him home. Chuck clearly liked him. Umm and Blair did too at some point...Rash decision, B? I know we all have our stupid hook ups and regrets, but talk about hitting a little close to home.

It takes another few episodes until everyone realized that Jack Bass never had Chuck's best intentions at heart. For now, he was someone Chuck saw as an ally. Next to Blair of course.

Blair tried to deny it, especially after Chuck threw her saying "I love you" back in her face when she was just trying to help. Then she had the argyle wearing matron posse over and realized that there was no reason to try and impress these people. Angry and nasty or not, Chuck needed her.

I thought I was leaving high school behind. I guess I never do.

Blair

Seriously, how awful was The Colony Club? I'd rather be wiping Pinkberry off of Penelope's shoe any day than have to deal with women who are actually still that awful and immature in their middle age!

Well before Blair and Jack rescued Chuck from his meltdown on the roof, Chuck shared a juicy tidbit with Dan. The big secret that Rufus and Lily were hiding was that they had a son who Lily gave up for adoption. Chuck decided not to say anything but that was before his hardcore spiral around the globe. Besides, he knew Dan would figure it out sooner or later.

Rufus had every right to be angry with Lily. Dan also had every right to feel creeped out about macking it to Serena after he found out they shared a sibling.

[to Dan] It's done as soon as you tell her... Sharing a sibling is a bit much, even for me.

Chuck

This episode was kind of the necessary transition episode after the new year. Bart had just died, Chuck was MIA, Blair confessed her love, the writers finally realized nobody liked Serena with Aaron Rose, and last but not least Rufus and Lily had to deal with the big secret. Plus we got to meet an important new character!

So what was your first impression of Jack Bass?
